About Spain
Spain is a country primarily located in southwestern Europe’s Iberian Peninsula with parts of the territory in the Atlantic Ocean and across the Mediterranean Sea. The largest part of Spain is situated on the Iberian Peninsula which includes 17 autonomous regions with diverse geography and cultures. Its territory also includes the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla in Africa.
In Spain, an autonomous community is a first-level political and administrative division, created in accordance with the Spanish Constitution of 1978, with the aim of guaranteeing limited autonomy of the nationalities and regions that make up Spain.
The 17 autonomous regions of Spain are: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Basque Country, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castile and León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Madrid, Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja, Navarre, Murcia and Valencia.
Many Cubans have Spanish ancestors.

Civil Registry in Spain
General Information
The first Civil Registry that operated regularly in Spain was created only for medium and large populations. It began on January 1, 1841, and was replaced by the current one after thirty years of operation.
The current Civil Registry in Spain began on January 1, 1871. This law required all municipalities to create a Civil Registry in which data referring to the civil status of all Spaniards (births, marriages, deaths, etc.) had to be registered, regardless of their beliefs.

Aproximació a un estudi sobre els lloretencs a Amèrica
by Agusti M. Vila Gali
Quaderns de la Selva, 2008: Num.: 20; Pgs. 123-170
Notes from the author:
I have collected information from several archives: Lloret de Mar Municipal Archive, Barcelona Protocol Archive, Santa Coloma de Farners County Historical Archive, Girona Municipal Archive, Sant Josep de Girona Archive, Barcelona Historical Archive, Archive of the Crown of Aragon, the Farnense District and various sources. It is difficult to condense all the information obtained in a single text because the exact dates do not coincide for the most part. For this reason, what has been found in each consulted document is given in separate reports, ordered but in chronological order from the first date obtained.
It must be said, however, that this compilation was not intended to be definitive, as there are still many gaps to be filled. A very important one is the one that refers to the people from Lloret who made the crossing at the end of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th, which I believe were not few. However, a section is devoted to this period titled “Between memory and anecdote.”

La Palma d’Ebre, un viatge sense retorn. El cost Huma de la Guerra de cuba per a la Palam D’Ebre (1895-1898) by Jose Juis Cifuentes Perea
ABSTRACT – The Cuban war of independence was a work in three acts, of which the last occurred in the final years of the 19thcentury. The Cuban War from 1895 to 1898 caused great troop movements towards the overseas colony. Historiogra-phy speaks of more than 200,000 men mobilised, and such a colossal movement of human beings was bound to result in a colossal number of casualties. Following rigorous research, in the following pages we detail the names and affiliations of the fallen soldiers from the Tarragona village of Palma d’Ebre.
