About Matanzas Provinces

Matanzas is a municipality and the capital of the province of Matanzas. Matanzas was founded in 1693 as San Carlos y San Severino de Matanzas. A royal decree (“real cédula”) issued on September 25, 1690, decreed that the bay and port of Matanzas be settled by 30 families from the Canary Islands. It is one of the historical provinces of Cuba.

Alphabetical Index of the Parish Registers of Matanzas, Cuba
Source:  REVISTA (the quarterly publication of the Cuban Genealogical Society)
This alphabetical index includes all the transcriptions from the Cathedral of the city of Matanzas, and the city of Guamutas. This index does not include all the transcriptions available. Also, please note that in this index there are entries that belong to Remedios, Las Villas, which were mixed in with the entries of Guamutas. The transcriptions were published in several issues of REVISTA since 1988. The first few pages explain how to read the entries in the index.

Slave Societies Digital Archive at Vanderbilt University

The Slave Societies Digital Archive (SSDA), directed by Jane Landers at Vanderbilt University, was launched in 2003. It is dedicated to identifying, cataloging, and digitally preserving endangered archival materials documenting the history of Africans and their descendants in the Atlantic World.
Slave Societies teams digitally captured ecclesiastical records of more than 750,000 individuals during almost three years of intensive work in Cuba and Brazil. Beginning in 2007, another grant allowed the group to preserve additional records at new project locations in Brazil, Colombia, and Cuba.

San Carlos de Borromeo Cathedral in Matanzas, Cuba

The church was founded on October 12, 1693. The first Mass was conducted by Bishop Diego Avelino de Compostela. The original church was made of guano palms and was destroyed by a storm. Shortly after construction was started on a permanent building with the work finishing in 1735 and all facilities in use in 1750. The church is located at Calle 282, Matanzas, Cuba.

San Agustin de Ceiba Mocha Church in Ceiba Mocha, Cuba

Currently - Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Church. The church was founded in 1797. It is currently located at Calle Marti between Cespedes and Lorenzo Escobar in Ceiba Mocha, Matanzas. Ceiba Mocha was founded in 1764 under the name of "Nueva Florida de Ceiba Mocha." Many émigrés from San Agustin de la Florida were relocated to Ceiba Mocha in 1763 with the British possesion on St. Augustine, Florida.
