CGC General Meeting – November 2024 – Cuba-Ireland Digital Archive
November 9 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Topic: Visualizing the Cuba-Ireland Digital Archive: A Database of Irish Immigration to Cuba, 1590-2010
Presenter: Giselle Gonzalez Garcia
Giselle is a PhD candidate at Concordia University (Montréal, Canada) working on a database/digital archive project about Irish immigration to Cuba. The database covers a wide historical period, from the late 16th century until the mid-20th century. The database has over 3,000 entries for individuals who were either born in Ireland and emigrated to Cuba or were born in Cuba and have some Irish ancestry connections.
The Cuba-Ireland Digital Archive hosted at the University of Galway includes the digitization of primary sources related to Irish immigration to Cuba. It is a collaboration with the Cuban National Archives and provincial archives in Matanzas and Cienfuegos, to digitize part of their collections. These sources are hosted at the Hardiman Library of the University of Galway and will also be included in Ireland’s Digital Repository.
She collaborated on the book Irlanda y Cuba: Historias Entretejidas / Ireland and Cuba: Entangled Histories
